OSSUARY

REVIEWED BY: JIM HARRISON
REVIEW SCORE: 9
Montreal death metal outfit Scorching Tomb is set to release its first full-length album, Ossuary, on October 24, 2025, via Time To Kill Records. The album begins with ‘Stalagmite Impalement’, which sets the aggressive tone of the record with an all-out assault of the senses — a heavy track that embodies a modern death metal sound. ‘Skullcrush’ features Devin Swank from Sanguisugabogg, who lends his trademark vocals over heavy riffs and chugs, making it one of my personal favourites. ‘Diminished To Ashes’ sounds straight out of a horror movie, with blood-curdling screams mixed with guttural vocals that give you goosebumps. At the same time, ‘Sanctum of Bones’ (Ossuary) opens with a thrash-inspired intro before diving into dark, fast-paced chaos that would be a killer addition to any live show.
‘Sentenced To Rot’ carries that classic death metal vibe, complete with a wicked, guttural chorus and a hardcore edge, and a killer chug. ‘Feel the Blade’, featuring Primal Horde — a band with whom they previously shared an EP (Primal Tomb, 2023) — ignites a frenzy of aggression that amplifies the album’s intensity. It’s a perfect mix of hardcore and death metal, and I predict it will be a fan favourite. ‘Bloodlust Sacrifice’ brings an Obituary-style energy with a technical death metal twist, a track best described as controlled chaos — its dark, low chug stunningly closing the song.
The album concludes with ‘Expired Existence’, a brutal finale that showcases the band’s tight musicianship and relentlessly dark vocals. At times, it’s surprisingly catchy while remaining untamed — a fitting end to such a ferocious record. After reviewing this album, I can confidently say that death metal is alive and well in 2025. Hailing from Montreal, Scorching Tomb has forged a contemporary technical death metal sound infused with hardcore elements, delivering something both fresh and groundbreaking. This album will resonate with metal fans across genres who crave something powerful, modern, and uncompromising.
