THE SETUP
Projections is part three in the Godthrymm, Visions trilogy of albums, which also includes Distortions (2023) and Reflections (2020). This U.K.-based band, made up of ex-members of My Dying Bride, Vallenfyre, and Solstice, have created their own version of U.K. doom metal, putting their stamp on the genre.
THE REVIEW
The album starts off with the heavy, sludgy ‘Trenched Deep’. Just about halfway through, a doomy thrash chug speeds things up, really giving me a vocal comparison to James Hetfield of Metallica. Guest vocals by Adie Bailey from English Dogs and Jay Walsh from Xentric add to this track. ‘Truth In My Own’ cranks in with another thick, heavy sound. Hamish Glencross’s vocals are fantastic, and the mix is so cool, with Catherine Glencross’s softer voice creating almost two songs in one. The guitar solo is amazing, and the drums and bass keep that doomy sound in step.
‘The Sun Never Fell’ begins with a more upbeat tone, but it is still massively thick and heavy. I love how the band utilizes the use of both vocalists, as it creates more of a journey for the listener. The track speeds up as it progresses and leads into a heavy doom chug. Only three songs in, and I can say this is by far the heaviest album from the trilogy. ‘Endure My Skin’, my personal favourite track, is an epic doom offering with guest vocalist Aaron Stainthorpe (ex-My Dying Bride). Topping out at over nine minutes, this is definitely a magnum opus, with harsh and clean vocals adding a cool dimension we have not heard on earlier tracks. Catherine’s softer vocals mix perfectly, and this vocal layering really makes the track stand out.
‘Jewels’ opens with Catherine’s softer vocals, and it feels like the album’s doom ballad, with some parts picking up a heavier groove. This track is full of tender moments, really immersing the listener. ‘Hope Is Eternal’ is the final track on this album, and what a fantastic way to end it. Vocals and musicianship are perfectly intertwined with a massive bass line and punchy drums. Parts of this track have a melodic death metal vibe musically, which is quite well done.
THE VERDICT
This third instalment of the Visions trilogy is definitely the most layered and heavy. What I like most about Godthrymm is that they consistently create thought-provoking music while keeping it expansive and fresh. The whole album takes the listener on a journey and melds perfectly with the trilogy. Fans of traditional doom, sludge, and touches of melodic death metal will find this a worthy addition to their metal collection.
