THE SETUP
For more than three decades, The 69 Eyes have occupied a unique position between gothic rock and hard rock, blending dark atmosphere with irresistible hooks and unmistakable charisma. On I Survive, the Finnish veterans lean more heavily into the latter, delivering a four-track EP fueled by energy, confidence, and memorable choruses. While the band’s trademark darkness remains present throughout, the dominant mood is one of determination and swagger rather than melancholy, resulting in a release that feels both familiar and reinvigorated.
THE REVIEW
The title track, ‘I Survive,’ opens the EP with a powerful statement of intent, showcasing a more energetic and hard-rock-oriented side of The 69 Eyes without sacrificing the band’s identity. While traces of their trademark dark charisma remain, the song replaces melancholy with determination, driven by a muscular rhythm section and a driving pace that immediately grabs the listener’s attention. Certain passages evoke the cinematic spirit of classic arena rock, recalling the larger-than-life atmosphere of action movie soundtracks and even recalling elements associated with bands like Guns N’ Roses and Billy Idol. At the center of it all, Jyrki 69 delivers a commanding vocal performance that preserves the band’s unmistakable character while embracing the track’s more aggressive and triumphant energy. The result is a song that feels both familiar and refreshing, transforming The 69 Eyes‘ gothic sensibilities into a fist-raising anthem built for the live stage.
The momentum continues with ‘Cold Sweat,’ a Thin Lizzy cover that proves to be one of the EP’s most energetic highlights. The 69 Eyes attack the classic with remarkable intensity, transforming it into a high-octane hard-rock anthem that feels perfectly suited to their style. Jyrki 69 delivers an aggressive yet captivating vocal performance that practically demands audience participation, drawing the listener deeper into the song with every verse and chorus. Beneath him, the thunderous drumming drives the track forward with relentless force, making it almost impossible to remain still as the rhythm naturally inspires headbanging. The guitar work stands out through its expressive harmonic accents and dynamic solo passages, adding an extra layer of attitude and excitement. Rather than sounding like a band simply paying tribute to a classic, The 69 Eyes make ‘Cold Sweat’ feel entirely their own, as if the song had always belonged in their repertoire.
‘In The Misery’ marks a slight shift in pace while maintaining the hard-rock spirit that defines the release. The song embraces a darker atmosphere without losing its momentum, striking a balance between shadowy moods and powerful songwriting. Particularly impressive is the rhythm section, with the drums building toward an intense finale featuring rapid double-kick passages that add extra weight and urgency. Equally essential is the bass performance, whose deep and commanding presence gives the track a physical impact that can almost be felt in the listener’s chest, reinforcing both the groove and the song’s emotional weight. Combined with memorable melodies and an instantly engaging chorus, ‘In The Misery’ demonstrates how The 69 Eyes can remain heavy while still crafting hooks that linger long after the music has ended.
Closing the EP is ‘Devil’s Rose,’ the heaviest and most imposing track of the four. Rather than relying on speed, the song builds its power through weight, attitude, and a commanding sense of swagger. Jyrki 69 delivers one of his roughest and most expressive vocal performances on the release, adopting a gritty tone that combines confidence, menace, and theatrical charm. Supported by deeper backing vocals, his delivery creates the impression of a sophisticated yet dangerous narrator, carrying the song with a dark, knowing grin. The instrumentation mirrors that attitude with powerful riffs and a crushing groove, giving the track a muscular presence without sacrificing melody. Despite its heaviness, ‘Devil’s Rose’ remains remarkably catchy, driven by hooks that quickly settle into the listener’s memory. The repeated “yeah” exclamations toward the end serve as a perfect final statement, sounding less like a simple vocal flourish and more like a confident affirmation that leaves the EP on a memorable, self-assured note.
THE VERDICT
Across its four tracks, ‘I Survive‘ succeeds by embracing the strengths that have always made The 69 Eyes distinctive while injecting them with renewed intensity. The title track and ‘Cold Sweat’ provide the EP’s fastest and most adrenaline-fueled moments, while ‘In The Misery’ and ‘Devil’s Rose’ emphasize groove, weight, and atmosphere without sacrificing accessibility.
Throughout the release, Jyrki 69 remains a commanding presence, supported by powerful musicianship that consistently places memorable hooks alongside hard-rock energy. Rather than dwelling in darkness, ‘I Survive‘ turns that darkness into fuel, delivering a collection of songs that feel tailor-made for loudspeakers, raised fists, and enthusiastic crowds. It stands as a concise but convincing reminder that The 69 Eyes remain capable of sounding both unmistakably themselves and revitalized at the same time.
