Multitalented mastermind and frontman Tobias Sammet has created an epic soundscape with his upcoming release of Avantasia’s latest quest, Here Be Dragons. This is the first recording since partnering with Napalm Records and is the tenth release following up from 2022’s critically acclaimed A Paranormal Evening With The Moonflower Society. This latest work features many guests who all add to the experience, which includes Michael Kiske (Helloween), Ronnie Atkins (Pretty Maids), Bob Catley (Magnum), Geoff Tate (Queensrÿche), Kenny Leckremo (H.E.A.T.), Adrienne Cowan (Seven Spires), Tommy Kaevik (Kamelot, ex-Seventh Wonder) and Roy Kahn (Conception, ex-Kamelot). The melding of genres into the band’s rock/metal framework creates such an incredible sound, even delving into pop, which fans have come to crave with Avantasia. The thought-provoking lyrics, storytelling, strong vocals and musicianship are all brought to the forefront with fantastic production that ties it all together and keeps the listener on their toes. Sammet, without fail, checks every point this time around.

Album opener ‘Creepshow’ hits straight out of the gate with a pop vibe that will surely be a live show staple. This song is incredibly catchy and has a killer guitar solo. I can see this track appealing to a more mainstream audience. It was a wise choice of song to start the album with. ‘Here Be Dragons’ has a bombastic sound that rivals an Andrew Lloyd Webber production. The addition of Geoff Tate gives the song a very identifiable prog feel. This is one of my personal favourites. ‘The Moorlands At Twilight’ pushes in more of a symphonic metal direction with guest vocalist Michael Kiske, which then transitions perfectly into ‘The Witch’ (featuring Tommy Kaevik of Kamelot). The first four tracks are incredibly catchy and are shining examples of Sammet’s ability to seamlessly switch genres from song to song.

‘Phantasmagoria’ speeds things up with guest vocalist Ronnie Atkins. This track has a faster, hard rock vibe that pushes a heavier sound yet keeps in step with the diversity of this album. This is another personal favourite of mine. ‘Bring On The Night’ (featuring Magnum‘s Bob Catley) creates an almost dream-like feel, slowing things down and only speeding up as the song progresses. This song has a beautiful melody and is, again, super catchy. Then, we have ‘Unleash The Kraken,’ which does precisely what the title suggests. The song starts with an emotional buildup, drawing the listener in before crashing into a powerful, heavy sound. Tobias’s captivating vocal performance shines throughout, making it clear that this track is destined to become a fan favourite on the live front.

‘Avalon’, featuring vocalist Adrienne Cowan, sends things back in a decidedly power-metal direction. The addition of Adrienne’s vocals creates a dual effect that sounds absolutely fantastic. The softer moments mix very well with the power of this song. ‘Against The Wind’ is a faster song that features H.E.A.T.‘s Kenny Leckremo. It’s a mix of power metal and hard rock, which features some genuinely astonishing vocals. Ending the album in style is ‘Everybody’s Here Until The End’, which features the legendary Roy Khan. The track starts with Khan’s unmistakable soft vocals, leading to a massive production. This classical ballad-like track produces tender moments that were undoubtedly saved as the finale to this incredible album. The addition of a heavier chorus creates an enormous sound for the album’s send-off, ending this musical journey with a classic curtain call.

What I love most about Here Be Dragons is its focus on delivering a diverse musical experience, where each song manages to create an immersive odyssey that takes the listener on a journey rather than just passively listening to the songs. This adds another dimension and sets Avantasia apart from any other band. Once again, Tobias has created a masterful soundtrack while protecting the focus of his musical direction. As always, the addition of so many fantastic guests is an added bonus.
