I absolutely love guitar-driven, heavy rock albums, and this is precisely what you get with Robin McAuley’s latest release, Soulbound (his third solo album via Frontiers Music). Possessing one of the most identifiable voices in rock, Robin‘s vocal performance is top-notch on this latest endeavour, culminating in one of the most anticipated hard rock releases in years. Soulbound marks a significant shift in McAuley’s sound, embracing a more edgy and powerful tone than his previous two albums. It’s a thrilling evolution that genuinely showcases the man’s vocal prowess. Throughout his career, McAuley has fronted many bands and projects, including three enormous releases for McAuley Schenker Group (1987’s Perfect Timing, 1989’s Save Yourself, and 1991’s M.S.G.), as well as two albums with the supergroup Black Swan (2020’s Shake The World and 2022’s Generation Mind), which showcased a star-studded cast of players.

Soulbound opens with one of the first early released singles, ‘Till I Die’, which serves as a perfect teaser of what’s to come. I was immediately struck by a Led Zeppelin-esque musical groove that contains some super-catchy vocals. The title track, ‘Soulbound’, showcases a strong melodic vocal performance along with a heavy rock chug, which results in a much darker sound. ‘The Best Of Me’ is an upbeat, heavy track that highlights the superb guitar work of musicians Andrea Seveso and Alessandro Mammola. This song is one of the heaviest on the album, giving it a solid metal edge. Robin‘s vocals elevate the track’s intensity, and the chorus invites you to raise your fists in unison. The third track, ‘Crazy’, features a slower, more melodic style with strong and direct vocals. The chorus, combined with the bluesy guitar work, creates an unmistakable earworm effect.

‘Let It Go’ has a classic 1980s vibe, showcasing Robin‘s ability to hit high notes with precision. ‘Wonder Of The World’ is another heavy track, characterized by a strong guitar chug, and a chorus that is equally catchy. ‘One Good Reason’ delivers a powerful beat and hints at an alternative rock direction. Track eight, ‘Bloody Bruised And Beautiful’, features a thumping bass line that adds a good amount of depth to the song. This hard-rocking track incorporates progressive rock elements, which are particularly evident in the impressive guitar work. ‘Paradise’ quickly gets to the point with its engaging riffs while Robin‘s melodic vocal performance is, once again, fantastic.

The closing tracks, ‘Born To Die” and ‘There Was A Man’, elevate the album with their outstanding drumming, fast riffs, and electrifying solos. These two songs are my favorites on the album, tying everything together beautifully. Overall, this album is packed with great songs that would enhance any live show with its endless amount of full-throttle energy.

He skillfully combines lighter party fare with alternative and progressive elements, resulting in a musical journey that is certain to keep listeners engaged with each successive spin of the album.
