REVIEW SCORE: 10
Kauan has built an impressively rich and prolific career over the past twenty years. Wayhome, their eleventh full-length album, is a striking testament to the dedication and emotional depth that define their music. Composed of eight tracks, this record ventures into a more progressive direction compared to their earlier works. I first discovered Kauan through Sorni Nai and was immediately captivated by their unique ability to blend atmosphere, melancholy, and beauty into something deeply moving. Staying true to their style, Wayhome follows a conceptual thread — each song flows seamlessly into the next, shaping a continuous narrative that feels both intimate and expansive.
The opening track, ‘Aim / Decide’, is entirely acoustic and sets the tone for the album: somber, introspective, and “doomy,” yet infused with post-metal textures. ‘Outline / Pave’, the second track, introduces Anton’s vocals in a beautifully harmonic and restrained way. With ‘Depart / Dive’, the band begins to reveal more progressive elements, crafting a piece that is as intricate as it is emotionally resonant. ‘Leave / Let Go’ stands out as one of the heaviest moments on the record, bringing in a black metal atmosphere and subtle growl vocals that contrast beautifully with the melodic arrangements. ‘Soothe / Sear’, the album’s longest track, continues this immersive, atmospheric black metal sound, drawing the listener ever deeper into its world. ‘Haste / Ascend’ introduces an industrial edge that feels both unexpected and perfectly fitting, adding texture and depth to the album’s sound. The penultimate song, ‘Embrace / Repel’, reminded me of Anathema’s Weather Systems; the same sense of yearning, reflection, and emotional catharsis runs through it. Finally, ‘Arrive / Resolve’ closes the album with a predominantly acoustic arrangement and spoken-word passages that feel like a quiet farewell — gentle, sincere, and profoundly moving.
Wayhome is one of the most beautiful and affecting albums I’ve heard in a long time. Its soundscapes feel alive, each note carrying emotion and purpose. Kauan have once again created something that transcends genre — a piece of art that speaks directly to the heart. Highly recommended for listeners who appreciate the emotional depth and atmosphere of Les Discrets, Alcest, Unreqvited, Fen, Shape of Despair, and Agalloch.
